WHAT WE DO

Biocomp is a Social Enterprise which applies commercial strategies to maximize the improvements in financial, social and environmental well-being while generating a return on investment. Our goal is to contribute to the establishment of a circular economy in Nepal.

Biocomp was started in 2011 by a group of people from the Netherlands who spent most of their holidays in Nepal and wanted to give something back to the country. They saw how the waste management situation in Nepal compromised the country’s beauty and decided to start a waste management company to solve this issue. Since more than 70% of the waste is organic, Biocomp started with the collection and recycling of organic waste. Now, nine years on, Biocomp processes over 10,000 tons of waste and sells compost to farmers and horticulturists in most districts in Nepal.

After all these years, Biocomp decided to take its first steps towards the recycling of dry solid waste. One of the main issues is plastic waste and, more specifically, low-grade plastics such as wrappers and plastic bags. These plastics are currently not collected and recycled; instead, they are dumped in the streets and rivers. The problem with plastic is that it does not decompose - the plastics dumped today will still be there a 100 years from now. Biocomp is dedicating itself to the collection and recycling of these plastics starting 2022.

Our objectives are:

To establish composting plants in collaboration with stakeholders to enhance organic waste recycling and reduce landfill waste.

To establish a recycling facility for low-grade plastics, enabling the production of raw materials for manufacturing boards while contributing to waste reduction and resource conservation.

To facilitate and localize the knowledge transfer on waste management from other places, empowering local communities and stakeholders to implement effective and context-specific waste management strategies.

To establish a value chain for low-grade plastics, optimizing their collection, sorting, processing, and transformation into valuable products.

To establish a full portfolio of waste management services suitable for stakeholders, addressing their specific needs and contributing to comprehensive waste management solutions.

To provide employment opportunities aligned with the International Labor Organization standards for the vulnerable population, fostering economic inclusivity and social empowerment.

To become a recognized and reputable brand for waste management in Nepal, synonymous with excellence, innovation, and positive impact on the environment and society.

To establish key partnerships across the waste management sector, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to facilitate the replication of successful projects.

To curate and monitor relevant data for the waste management business, creating a comprehensive waste management dashboard for Nepal that aids in informed decision-making and performance evaluation.
